Meet this year’s judging panel
Once again the judging panel for the City A.M. awards brings together some of the best known and brightest minds in the City. Our already excellent panel is this year joined by Katherine Garrett-Cox, chief executive of Alliance Trust.
ALLISTER HEATH
Allister, editor of City A.M., chairs the judging session. Last year’s session lasted nearly two hours and was notable for its lively and good humoured debate. Allister holds the casting vote if our judges are tied.
DAVID HELLIER
David, City A.M.’s deputy editor, has helped select the distinguished panel. In putting the group together he has tried to ensure the members are exceptionally experienced and are well placed to come to good judgements on award winners.
ALISON CARNWATH
Alison, a former investment banker at Schroders, has since taken up a number of directorships. She is chair of the remuneration committee at Barclays, chair of Land Securities and on the board of Man Group.
NIGEL BOARDMAN
Nigel is one of the City’s best known corporate lawyers. He joined Slaughter & May, where he remains a partner, in 1973, and has worked with most of the big companies at one time or another. An Arsenal fan, he advised Liverpool on the sale to new owners in 2010.
PHIL RAPER
Phil is head of UK equity capital markets and chairman of corporate broking at Goldman Sachs. He joined the firm in 2000 and was named managing director in the same year. His career includes spells at Schroders and UBS Warburg, where he spent 16 years.
SIR ROGER CARR
Sir Roger is one of the UK’s best known businessmen, and is currently president of the CBI, the employers’ group. He is also chairman of Centrica and a senior independent director of the Court of the Bank of England. Sir Roger was also chairman of Cadbury. prior to its takeover by Kraft.
KATHERINE GARRETT-COX
Katherine was appointed chief executive of Britain’s largest investment trust, Alliance Trust, in 2008. She has enjoyed a 21 year career in the investment industry, starting out as a portfolio manager at Hill Samuel Asset Management, where she was investment director.
ROLAND RUDD
There can be few better connected people than Roland, who is the founder of Finsbury, the City’s top financial public relations firm. Roland is a consummate networker who prides himself on entertaining round the clock. He is a former financial journalist.
SIMON MACKENZIE-SMITH
Simon joined Merrill Lynch (now owned by Bank of America) in July 1996 and became chairman of UK and Ireland corporate and investment banking in 2010, having led the business since 2003. A veteran deal-maker, Simon has recently made some major hires. within the group’s UK teams.
TRUETT TATE
Truett, currently chairman of Arora (hotels and property group), retired from Lloyds Banking Group in February, following a long career in global banking there and at Citibank. He has started a number of companies and now serves on a variety of boards.
