Miners get City Freedom
CHILEAN president Sebastian Pinera and the 33 miners rescued last week after over two months trapped underground in a collapsed mine are set to be awarded the Freedom of the City of London.
Pinera will today attend a lunch at the Mansion House hosted by Lloyd’s of London chairman Lord Levene, standing in for absent Lord Mayor Nick Anstee, as part of the UK leg of a European tour. At the lunch, Levene will make a speech proposing the president and the miners for the Freedom of the City award, in recognition of their bravery before and during the rescue, during which the men were hoisted over half a mile to safety from the depths of a Chilean mine.
Levene and Pinera will also discuss infrastructure and renewable energy resources at the lunch.
Pinera is also due to meet the Queen and Prime Minister David Cameron today.
