GERALD RONSON’S COLOURFUL NEW TENANTS ARRIVE AT HERON TOWER
NOT content with winning City A.M.’s award for Personality of the Year, real estate tycoon Gerald Ronson has gained another title – owner of Britain’s largest privately held aquarium.
The larger-than-life character has been putting the finishing touches to the colourful marine addition at Bishopgate’s 230m high Heron Tower.
Ronson is of course not one to do things by halves. The mammoth tank is filled with 1200 fish, including several varieties of sharks. It measures 12m wide, is 2m deep, contains 70,000 litres of water and weighs an impressive 100 tonnes when fully filled. Just as well it’s in the lobby.
The new water feature is home to 67 species, supplied by the National Marine Aquarium in Plymouth, which will also be responsible for care and maintenance such as feeding the fish and cleaning the artificial coral.
All of which ensures Jaws and company will live happy, pampered lives – with a more guaranteed existence than those other fish headed for the top-floor restaurant, Sushi Samba…
