More than one in three on incapacity are declared fit
MORE than one in three people claiming incapacity benefit are fit for work, according to the government’s first round of reassessments.
Around 37 per cent of the 141,100 claimants given a fresh interview were found to be fit for work, while 34 per cent are eligible for benefits and help getting back to work, and 29 per cent will be given financial support with no requirement to get a job.
Approximately 1.5m people currently claim they are unable to work, and all will be reassessed in the next two years.
Employment minister Chris Grayling said the figures “justify our decision to reassess all the people on incapacity benefit”.
But the TUC said the tests are designed “to kick people off benefits whatever the cost”.
