Bonfire Night strike is off
LONDON firefighters called off their Bonfire Night strike last night with just hours to spare, citing concerns over the safety of the public.
Matt Wrack, general secretary of the Fire Brigades Union, said the union had scrapped plans to strike on Friday from 10am through to 9am on Sunday.
“We are always concerned about taking any strike action — including on Bonfire Night,” Wrack said after talks between London Fire Brigade and the union.
The dispute over proposed shift changes has not been resolved but Wrack said management had withdrawn a threat to sack firefighters if they refused to sign new contracts.
The London Fire Brigade had won a High Court order earlier in the day stopping striking firemen from blocking attempts by stand-in crews to answer emergency calls on Bonfire Night.
