Ribery signs new Bayern deal
FOOTBALL: France star Franck Ribery has turned his back on a summer move by signing a new five-year contract with Bayern Munich.
The former Marseille winger, 27, who has battled injury this season, had been tipped to leave Germany for Spain or England.
Croatia beat depleted Wales
FOOTBALL: An experimental Wales side missing 15 players slipped to a 2-0 friendly defeat away to Croatia last night.
The home side, themselves without Arsenal striker Eduardo and Bayern Munich pair Ivica Olic and Danijel Pranjic, went ahead when Ivan Rakitic lobbed Wayne Hennessey. Tottenham midfielder Luka Modric teed up Drago Gabric to score a second late on.
Bolt renounces records
ATHLETICS: Usain Bolt insists he has put record-breaking to one side after coasting to 200m victory on his Diamond League debut in Shanghai.
The Jamaican 100m and 200m world record holder, who missed the series opener in Doha, clocked 19.76 seconds despite little real pressure in China. Bolt said: “This year I’m not going to chase any records. It doesn’t matter if I get beaten this season.”
Bethrah lands Irish Guineas
HORSE RACING: Dermot Weld’s 16-1 shot Bethrah prouduced a late surge to snatch the Irish 1,000 Guinneas at the Curragh.
Owned by Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum and ridden by Pat Smullen, the filly found a gap on the rail to pip Anna Salai by a head and beat 3-1 favourite Music Show into third. Weld said: “That’s the fourth time I’ve won the 1,000 Guineas so I’m very pleased.”
