Eye injury casts Boucher doubt
South Africa wicketkeeper Mark Boucher is uncertain to be fit for the impending Test series with England after suffering a lacerated eyeball in yesterday’s tour match with Somerset.
Boucher was without a helmet when a ball bowled by leg-spinner Imran Tahir struck the stumps to send a bail into his left eye and caused distressing scenes from which blood appeared from his eye and demanded instant medical attention.
“It is a significant injury,” said team manager Dr Mohammed Moosajee. “Mark sustained a direct blow to the left eye, which resulted in a laceration to the white part.
“It is what we call an eyeball rupture. A lot depends on whether there is damage to the retina, which allows us to see and focus. We won’t know about that until after the surgery.”
