Sub Anichebe pounces to edge Magpies towards bottom three
NEWCASTLE UNITED 1 vs EVERTON 2
NEWCASTLE United remain two points off the Premier League relegation zone after an Everton fightback continued their disastrous run of results.
The Magpies have now lost 10 of their last 13 games but managed to start life without Chelsea-bound Demba Ba with an immediate goal. Papiss Cisse gave the hosts the lead after just two minutes, capitalising upon a series of defensive errors to head over Tim Howard.
James Perch headed against the post for Newcastle but Leighton Baines drew Everton level with a fine swerving 25-yard free-kick before the break.
A lively contest was settled on the hour by substitute Victor Anichebe, who converted Nikica Jelavic’s cross from close range within 90 seconds of coming on.
Newcastle desperately attempted to draw level as Shola Ameobi edged wide and Gabriel Obertan tested Howard but Everton climbed back up to fifth with victory.
