Donald backs friend Scott to overcome Open heartache
WORLD No1 Luke Donald insists his friend Adam Scott has the mental strength to emerge stronger from his nightmare ordeal in the closing stages of the Open on Sunday.
Scott’s hitherto superb form crumbled with his first Major in sight, the Australian bogeying the final four holes to hand the Claret Jug to Ernie Els.
“I feel for Adam. It was tough to watch and that’s a tough situation to be in,” said Englishman Donald, who finished tied for fifth.
“Hats off to Ernie for pressing on and never giving up. Both of them handled it extremely well. It’s tough to swallow for Adam but I think he’ll come back strong.
“Technically he has a very sound swing. Mentally is where he’ll have to bounce back, but how he handled it showed a lot. He was shellshocked but handled it the right way and said the right things. That says something.”
Luke Donald spoke at the official opening of the Mizuno Performance Centre – open to the public between 24 July and 12 August at Centre Point Building, 101-103 New Oxford Street. Visit www.mizunoseiei.com for further details.
