Resolute Watson targets third round Radwanska redemption
BRITISH No1 Heather Watson expects a physical test against fourth seed Agnieszka Radwanska in the Australian Open third round, after completing a remarkable comeback win over Ksenia Pervak yesterday.
Watson, 20, was a point away from elimination, trailing the Kazakh by a set and 6-3 in the second set tie-break. But the Brit rallied to win 4-6, 7-6 (9-7), 6-2 in a gruelling three hour encounter.
Pole Radwanska – unbeaten in 2013, winning two titles in the progress – provides a stern test for Watson in their match tonight.
“She’s different to most girls,” said Watson. “She’s consistent, got great feet, so it’s going to be another physical match.”
Watson, outclassed by Radwanska 6-0, 6-2 at Wimbledon last year, is expecting a closer match. “The first time I just went guns blazing,” she added. “This time I’m a different player.”
Fellow Briton Laura Robson faces 2011 Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova this morning.
