Smith targets 2016 medal
GREAT Britain weightlifter Zoe Smith hopes to use the experience gained from reaching the women’s 58kg event Olympics final as a springboard to future success.
Smith finished in 12th place overall but in lifting 121kg in the clean and jerk element set a new British record and believes she can now realistically aim for a medal at the next Games in Rio in four years’ time.
“It seems a long way off but I’ll have a lot more experience after the next four years and I do think I’m going to be able to bring it, come 2016,” said Smith. “The plan was always for me to compete at 58kg, just for experience, because that is where I’ll be hopefully be winning a medal in 2016.
“It’s two fingers up to them [the critics], basically. What are you doing with your life? I’ve just competed at the Olympics.”
