Gosden juveniles worth noting at Sandown
IT’S a pretty uninspiring weekend of racing action, but there are still winners to be had and first stop is the opener at Thirsk this afternoon where Brian Meehan’s MASTER MING has a good chance of breaking his maiden tag. He disappointingly failed to win a four-runner affair at Folkestone earlier this month, but the stable is in much better form and, although this afternoon’s race is more competitive, he should be able to put his experience to good use.
Sandown stages a fairly average card today, but the two divisions of the maiden feature some promising runners. This is the time of year when John Gosden’s juveniles tend to come to the fore and he looks to hold decent chances in both races. RANGI ran a race full of promise behind stablemate Ashdan on debut at Newmarket earlier this month and this Champagne Stakes entrant can land the first division (3.25pm). SPACE SHIP makes his debut 35 minutes later and big things are expected from this son of Galileo who has an entry in the Racing Post Trophy and Investec Derby.
Tomorrow’s racing looks trappy, but James Fanshawe’s CAPTIVATOR should go close in Sandown’s Group Three Atalanta Stakes (3.25pm). She has to bounce back from a disappointing effort in the Windsor Forest Stakes last time, but a repeat of her second to Izzi Top at Newmarket back in May would make her very difficult to beat in this.
