Amazon announces new Kindle and 2,000 permanent UK jobs
AMAZON yesterday unveiled larger Kindle Fire tablets with lower prices as it also revealed plans to create more than 2,000 permanent jobs over the next two years in the UK.
The new Kindle, revealed to crowds in Santa Monica, California, is set to challenge Apple’s dominant iPad with lower prices and a trove of digital content that Amazon hopes will win it more market share.
The world’s largest Internet retailer lifted the lid on devices with price tags ranging from $159 (£100) to $599. Last year, Amazon debuted a 7-inch tablet at roughly half the price of the $499 iPad. In just 10-months, it became the number two tablet after the iPad.
The firm also announced the creation of 2,000 jobs with the opening of three new UK centres.
Prime Minister David Cameron said: “This is great news, not only for those individuals who will find work, but for the UK economy. This shows that the UK has the infrastructure and talent to continue to attract major investments.”
