Groves vows to knock out Froch with left hand
CHALLENGER George Groves has promised to leave Wembley Stadium tomorrow night with Carl Froch’s world super-middleweight titles and will do so by knocking out the champion with a left hook.
The pair’s rematch has been eagerly anticipated since their original November bout was adjudged to have been prematurely stopped in Froch’s favour by referee Howard Foster.
A post-war record 80,000 fans will watch the British rivals square off and Groves is expecting to win.
“I’m going to perform on Saturday night and become world champion and do it on the big stage looking very good doing it,” said the Londoner.
“In boxing you can be the most talented fighter out there, but you need people to watch and I’m fortunate I’m in that situation.
“It’ll be the left hook that finishes Carl. I’m fully prepared and I just can’t wait.”
At 36, Froch is 10 years Groves’ senior, but rubbishes claims he could struggle to go the distance against his energetic opponent.
“Of course I’ve still got what it takes and of course I can still do what I did in my twenties,” said Froch, who has won 32 of his 34 career fights.
“I am performing, the output is there, I’m still doing it. It may be a cliché, but age really is just a number.
“Hardcore boxing fans know what I’m about. When I turn up in the shape I’m in now, you’ve seen it time and time again against top opposition, I’ve proved I can perform at the top level. I’m bringing that confidence and that experience with me into this fight on top of being at absolutely unbelievable shape, which will allow me to perform at my best for the whole duration of the fight if necessary.
“But I’m convinced this fight won’t go the distance and that George Groves won’t hear the final bell.”
Boxing on the undercard at Wembley will be Britain’s Olympic champion James DeGale, set to fight the winner of the main event should he beat American Brandon Gonzales.
Heavyweight Anthony Joshua takes on Matt Legg, while Dagenham’s Kevin Mitchell meets Ghislain Maduma for the IBF lightweight title. The vacant WBA bantamweight belt will be contested by England’s Jamie McDonnell and Tabtimdaeng Na Rachawat of Thailand.
