England team head to US as scandal engulfs Qatar 2022
ENGLAND’S footballers last night landed in Miami where they will play two friendlies ahead of this month’s World Cup in Brazil.
Yet the build-up to the tournament is being over-shadowed by allegations of corruption surrounding a future World Cup, planned for Qatar in 2022.
Senior figures from within the game – such as Fifa vice-president Jim Boyce and Football Association chairman Greg Dyke – have said there should be a re-vote on which country hosts the 2022 event, if allegations of bribery are backed up by an official investigation.
“If there is a proper investigation and that investigation says that there was corruption involved, which I know the Qataris are denying, then obviously there will have to be a re-vote,” Dyke said.
The story, broken by the Sunday Times, emerged on the day that England set off for Miami, where the team will play Ecuador on Wednesday and Honduras on Saturday, before heading to Brazil.
