Five injured in Sao Paolo protests
POLICE and anti-World Cup protesters clashed in Sao Paolo yesterday. At least five people were injured when rubber bullets were fired and tear gas released to disperse hundreds of people unhappy with the cost of the tournament while public services are in need of investment.
Mexico must beat mental block
MEXICO coach Miguel Herrera has urged his team to clear a mental hurdle and reach the World Cup final. Mexico have exited the last five tournaments at the last-16 phase, but Herrera said: “From the outset we have to visualise the idea that we can reach the final.”
Spain-Holland stadium not ready
PREPARATIONS were still being made to the Arena Fonte Nova,
24 hours before it is set to host Spain’s opening Group B match against Holland tonight. Security fences and X-ray machines were still being set up yesterday at the 52,000-seater stadium in Salvador.
Giroud expects to start for France
ARSENAL striker Olivier Giroud believes three goals in three World Cup warm-up matches should be enough to earn a start against Honduras on Sunday. He said: “I feel on form and very positive. I hope to get a lot of playing time.”
