Can England still qualify? It’s not going to be easy
No team has ever qualified from their World Cup group after losing their first two games, but England still have a sliver of hope that they can progress to the last 16.
After last night's disappointment at the hands of Luis Suarez and Uruguay, England now depend on results going their way, but even that may not be enough.
For the Three Lions, currently bottom of Group D on no points, to stand a chance in the final group game on Tuesday afternoon, Italy have to win this afternoon.
If Italy fail to beat Costa Rica, it is all over for Roy Hodgson's men. Assuming Italy do win today, which they realistically should, England need to beat Costa Rica on Tuesday and hope Uruguay lose to Cesare Prandelli's men.
But that alone will not be enough, England will also need to finish above Costa Rica on goal difference. Currently the Costa Ricans are on plus three while England are on minus one, so there is a four-goal difference to overturn, which is no easy feat.
The last time England actually scored more than two goals in a World Cup group game was all the way back in 1986, when a Gary Lineker hat-trick saw Sir Bobby Robson's team beat Poland 3-0.
Another ominous stat? The last time that Italy won all their group games was 24 years ago, in Italia 90.
