British Gas to shore up customer service team with 300 new staff
British Gas, the energy supplier owned by FTSE 100 utility firm Centrica, today said it is hiring an extra 300 staff to bolster its customer service team, as complaints about energy companies soar to their highest level.
The new recruits will help customers with “everything from bills and boiler breakdowns, to engineer visits and energy efficiency,” said Kevin Roxburgh, director of customer services at British Gas.
The announcement follows figures released by the Energy Ombudsman on Monday that showed complaints to the big six suppliers more than doubled to 22,671 in the first six months of the year, with 84 per cent related to problems with billing.
Industry body Energy UK said companies are working hard to resolve issues as quickly as possible.
Regulator Ofgem said earlier this month that British Gas will pay £1m in compensation after admitting to misleading customers on how much they could save on their bills.
