Trott throws off effects of kidney infection to take points race gold
DOUBLE Olympic champion Laura Trott insisted her Commonwealth Games gold in the women’s points race, after recovering from a kidney infection, meant every bit as much as success at London 2012.
Despite being tied on 37 points with Wales’ Elinor Barker, English track cyclist Trott was awarded gold after placing higher in the final sprint.
Scotland’s youngest-ever competitor, 13-year-old Erraid Davies, won a bronze medal in the SB9 100m breaststroke.
Trott had endured an indifferent Games having failed to qualify for the individual pursuit and finishing 11th in the 10km scratch race, but admits her gold medal is the perfect tonic.
“After the week I had this medal is right up there with the Olympics,” she said. “I’m over the moon, it’s such a relief.”
Fran Halsall earned her second gold medal of the Games and the 10th of her career, completing a sprint double after setting a British and Commonwealth record in the 50m butterfly as Siobhan-Marie O’Connor took first place in the 200m individual medley.
“It’s my tenth Commonwealth medal so it’s a special one,” said Halsall.
Charlotte Kerwood and Steven Scott won gold in the men and women’s double trap events.
