Murray canters home with US Open on horizon
FORMER Wimbledon champion Andy Murray continued his preparations for a tilt at a second US Open title later this month with a commanding victory over Portugal’s Joao Sousa in the last 32 of the Cincinnati Masters yesterday.
The 27-year-old reached the tournament’s third round after breaking his opposite number in the opening service game before wrapping up a 6-3, 6-3 triumph in an hour and 11 minutes.
The eighth seed will now face last year’s runner-up John Isner in the last 16, with the clash acting as a further warm-up to the final Major of the season in New York.
Qualifier James Ward crashed out of the competition after suffering a 6-2, 6-2 defeat to Julien Benneteau yesterday.
The British No2 shocked Spain’s Guillermo Garcia-Lopez in the second round but had little answer to Benneteau as the Frenchman broke him twice in each set.
