Cameron mistakes Waterstones for a small business
WE’RE big fans of American imports here in the UK; we’ve adopted Black Friday as though St George himself spent the first Friday after Thanksgiving hunting for discounted iPads, and now we’re celebrating Small Business Saturday too.
Helping support its debut in the UK, government figures made an effort to get out and shop local at the weekend.
George Osborne was pictured in a pet shop in Burnham buying “treats” for Lola – his bichon frise puppy and arguably his best PR move to date – while Ed Miliband joined Chuka Umunna browsing in a Crystal Palace bookstore, mirroring President Obama who spent his own Small Business Saturday photocall in a local bookstore. But sadly, the day wasn’t without political gaffe.
The Prime Minister was doing so terribly well, tweeting a picture of himself in a butchers in Aylesbury buying some meat for dinner – he even got a mention of his mum in: “Supporting #SmallBizSatUK by picking up lamb chops from Cobbs Butchers – I’m cooking dinner for my mum tonight.”
But then he ruined it. Instead of nipping to an independent bookstore next, David Cameron was instead spotted heading into Waterstones – the UK’s largest book chain. Doh.
