How to get your name into the Tower without losing your head
LONDON has more historical sites than you can shake an A-level text book at, but the chance to be more involved in the capital’s history is a rare thing. Step forward the Tower of London and its newly launched 1535 Society, which aims to restore the Chapel of St Peter ad Vincula (the resting palace of three Queens of England) and More’s Crypt. The Society, which takes its name from the year Sir Thomas More met his maker at the Tower and was launched by Lord Dannatt, wants to encourage City folk to get more involved with the Tower. The society comes with a host of benefits. There are both individual (£10,000) and corporate memberships (£25,000) – which each come with a personalised dedication plaque to be placed in the newly restored chapel, invitations to attend the exclusive 1535 Society dinner, entry to other ceremonial events at the Tower and access to a range of lecture series and concerts. Almost enough to lose your head over.
