US airstrikes continue as Kurds fight to retake Mosul Dam from IS
The US has upped the number of airstrikes on IS forces, helping Kurdish peshmerga troops recapture the vital Mosul Dam.
US Central Command confirmed a total of 14 strikes on Sunday in missions that seemed to extend beyond the US's original stated aims to protect US interests and prevent a humanitarian disaster.
Sunday's strikes targeted IS forces near the dam, and, according to the Central Command, damaged or destroyed
10 armed vehicles, seven Humvees, two armoured personnel carriers, and one checkpoint.
Yesterday, IS forces around both the dam and the city of Irbil were hit nine times by US sorties.
The dam is seen as crucial because breaching it could cause water and electricity shortages or even intense flooding.
