Johnson leaves FA panel after homophobic comments row
FORMER Birmingham defender Michael Johnson has withdrawn from the Football Association’s inclusion advisory board having come under fire for comments regarding homosexuality.
The 40-year-old stated during a TV appearance in 2012 that he would not support the FA’s anti-homophobia campaign because “in the bible it states homosexuality is detestable unto the Lord”.
Following Johnson’s addition last month to the FA’s 10-man panel to promote inclusion within football, he adamantly declared he no longer held such views.
However, Johnson yesterday chose to terminate his role.
He said: “I feel that it’s in the best interests of all concerned if I step down from my duties.
“My position was voluntary and I’ve decided to use that time to continue my personal development and education within equality.”
