UK 4G growth is second fastest in the world as EE hits 2m users
MOBILE giant EE yesterday said it had surpassed two million 4G users, just four months after exceeding a million users, doubling the company’s original target for 2013.
EE’s current 4G sign up rate is now the second fastest in the world, behind South Korea.
The mobile network also confirmed that 75 per cent of small and medium enterprise customers have upgraded to 4G, showing a strong demand from businesses and corporate users.
Average data use across EE grew by 70 per cent in 2013, with social media and video being huge contributing factors.
EE is also investing £275m into voice usage, seeing it as key to future growth after a 25 per cent increase in spending across the EE network in 2013.
Chief executive Olaf Swantee said: “Two out of three new 4G customer have moved over from Orange and T-Mobile. This year, our network priority is to deliver the benefits of super fast mobile internet to more of the UK.”
However, the impact of 4G across the mobile network remains relatively low, with just seven per cent of EE’s 27m customers on 4G plans.
EE was the first carrier to launch the service last year, ahead of rivals Vodafone and O2.
