Rado wins with Murray
IT isn’t just English tennis that has been emerging from the wilderness thanks to Andy Murray’s winning ways. His watch sponsor Rado – who reportedly pay Murray £9.9m for a three-year deal signed last year – is a brand that has struggled for visibility in recent years. But like many top sportsmen, it’s coming back into a bit of form.
Rado’s glory days were in the 1970s and ‘80s, when its adoption of high-tech case materials, noticeably as a pioneering force in ceramic watches, and avant-garde shapes, played to the slick, forward-thinking fashions of the era.
After a period out of favour with the tastemakers, an injection of fresh creative juice, along with a wider trend towards tough ceramic watches, is putting Rado back on the map. Murray’s watch, the HyperChrome Court automatic chronograph, is a particularly sleek number, with a case made from sandblasted black ceramic. If the Wimbledon highlights don’t grab you, there are orange or blue versions available too. £2,589 www.rado
