Owner of Currys and PC World enjoys record Boxing Day sales
DIXONS Retail emerged as one of the winners in the battle for consumers’ attention this Christmas as booming tablet sales and demand for kitchenware and large televisions helped drive sales.
The owner of Currys and PC World said like-for-like sales in the UK & Ireland jumped five per cent in the period from 1 November to 4 January.
Black Friday, the US-style discount day brought forward sales at the beginning of December, prompting a quiet couple of weeks in the run up to Christmas, chief executive James Sebastian said.
However sales “took off like a rocket” from Boxing Day, when the retailer enjoyed the busiest day in its history, taking a record £100,000 a minute.
“This is especially encouraging as we have already passed the anniversary of Comet’s departure from the market,” James said.
Shares fell more than six per cent despite Dixons strong forecasts.
