Skanska wins contract for The Scalpel
CONSTRUCTION firm Skanska has won the contract to build the 190m tall office building known as The Scalpel.
The Nordic firm, which has also built the Gherkin and the Heron Tower, is due to start work immediately on the Kohn Pedersen Fox (KPF) designed high-rise, with completion set for early 2017.
The building, at the junction of Lime Street and Leadenhall Street in the City, is being built for insurance firm WR Berkley, and will have an internal floor area of 624,000 sq ft over 35 office floors, plus two basement levels featuring retail and restaurant areas.
It will also feature an 11,000 sq ft public square to complement the existing outside space. This will include public seating, art space and tables linked to a coffee shop, echoing the 17th century origins of the London insurance market at Lloyd’s Coffee House.
