Subway to open 1,300 shops in the UK over the next six years
SANDWICH chain Subway announced plans yesterday to open 1,300 stores in the UK and Ireland over the next six years, creating around 13,000 new jobs.
The company, which is famous for its US-style foot-long rolls, said its expansion plans were fuelled by a growing consumer demand for “convenient, affordable” food on the go.
It has increased the number of franchises in the UK by 150 last year through partnerships with motorway service stations and forecourts such as Welcome Break and Applegreen and currently runs 1,734 stores.
“In addition to our traditional store development we see new potential in settings such as universities, stations, convenience stores, hospitals, airports and petrol stations,” assistant regional director Mike Charest said.
Subway was co-founded by the group’s president Fred DeLuca, who opened the first sandwich shop with Peter Buck in 1965 when he was 17-years-old.
