Eurotunnel posts record revenue thanks to rising passenger traffic
EUROTUNNEL’S revenues topped €1bn (£890m) last year, the Channel Tunnel operator revealed yesterday.
Overall turnover surged 12 per cent to a record €1.09bn, as passenger shuttles, the Eurostar high-speed trains and rail freight traffic all rose.
The Eurostar carried 10m passengers in a year for the first time in its history in 2013.
Almost 325m passengers have travelled through the Channel Tunnel since its opening in 1994.
Truck traffic fell seven per cent, however, with a spokesperson pinning this to the effects of the Olympics on 2012 traffic.
“If you look at the longer term trend we’re growing as we always have been,” he said.
MyFerryLink, which Eurotunnel set up from the ashes of SeaFrance in early 2012, posted annual revenues of €74m, up from €7m. The company successfully challenged a Competition Commission ruling on the Dover to Calais ferry service in December.
“Overall, albeit the financial crisis is not yet over, and competition remains vigorous across the Channel, customer loyalty to the Eurotunnel system is clear,” the company said.
