24 January on this day…
24 JANUARY 1973. World Cup Qualifier: England 1 (Hunter) Wales 1 (Toshack). England skipper Bobby Moore (left) and Rodney Marsh (right) joke before kick-off, but the match would end with England booed off at Wembley after a scrappy draw; it was apparent a great era for English football was ending. The dropped point became crucial after England lost 2-0 in Poland. It meant England had to win the return game in October to qualify for the 1974 World Cup in Germany. Manager Sir Alf Ramsey dropped Moore, made Martin Peters skipper and England drew 1-1 to fail to make the finals, largely because of the heroics of goalkeeper Jan Tomaszewski, who had been described on television as a “clown” by Brian Clough.
