Carney puts Austen on banknote but Osborne has the final pun
BANK of England governor Mark Carney finally unveiled the “concept” for the new £10 note yesterday, which will feature author Jane Austen.
“[As] Austen joins Adam Smith, Boulton and Watt, and in future, Churchill, our notes will celebrate a diverse range of individuals who have contributed in a wide range of fields,” said Carney.
The Austen note will be issued within a year of the Churchill £5 note, which is billed, excuse the pun, to appear in 2016. The tenner will feature a quote from Pride and Prejudice: “I declare after all there is no enjoyment like reading!”
George Osborne couldn’t resist reacting to the news: “After understandable row over lack of women, [the decision] shows sense and sensibility.” Perhaps stick to the day job, chancellor.
