Premier League: Liverpool to strengthen further after derby glory
LIVERPOOL 4 vs EVERTON 0
LIVERPOOL manager Brendan Rodgers revealed last night he hoped to add a major last-minute signing to the team which romped to their biggest Merseyside derby victory since 1982.
In a blistering display at Anfield last night, skipper Steven Gerrard opened the scoring, Daniel Sturridge netted twice in the first half, then missed a penalty in the second period shortly after Suarez notched his 23rd goal of the season.
And Rodgers is hopeful of adding more quality to his squad before Friday’s 11pm transfer deadline.
“Hopefully we can do something in the next couple of days,” he said. “We are working together and hopefully we can have a major signing in before the window closes.”
Roberto Martinez felt Everton produced the most “naive” first-half performance of his short tenure and they fell behind on 21 minutes when Gerrard headed in Suarez’s corner at the near post.
Matters got worse for the visitors when Sturridge struck a quick-fire double before half-time.
Midfielder Coutinho split the Toffees defence with a low pass which Sturridge fired in and, two minutes later, the England forward latched on to Kolo Toure’s long pass forwards and lobbed on-rushing goalkeeper Tim Howard from 25 yards. After half-time Suarez intercepted Phil Jagielka’s square pass inside his own half, raced forward and fired past Howard. But, four minutes later, Sturridge fluffed the chance to complete his hat-trick, blazing a penalty over the crossbar.
Rodgers added: “It’s another three points and a massive victory against a rival close to us in the table.”
