Cowes Week Diary: Spurs director Mills on song in ideal conditions
ABERDEEN Asset Management Cowes Week is in full flow. The first two days are completed and have been sailed in the most perfect conditions. The sun has been shining and, most importantly, there has been ideal wind – there’s nothing worse than waiting for wind to start a regatta.
Yesterday was Family Day, which meant that boats sailing with all family members on board flew a Family Day flag. One of the greatest things about Cowes Week is the fact that mum, dad and kids can all compete against the best in the sport. One of the more famous families on the water yesterday were Olympians and sisters Lucy and Kate Macgregor, who sailed with their father in Premier Flare, Class 3. Family was obviously the winning ingredient, as they won the race yesterday after coming third on Saturday.
Tottenham director Sir Keith Mills has won both races so far in Class 1, the largest racing boats here, on his TP52. In one of the smaller classes, the Dragons, Olympic coach Graham Bailey also has two wins.
Today brings big winds, with quite a bit of rain, which means the action will be great to watch but wet. The afternoon’s entertainment is a speed challenge off the Green involving Olympians racing kites and windsurfers. If you want to keep track of the action while at your desk, Aberdeen Asset Management have introduced live streaming on the event website alongside Cowes Radio commentary, which I launched on the Squadron Platform on Saturday.
