Jamaican bobsleigh team lose luggage on way to Olympics
JAMAICA’S bobsleigh team missed their first Winter Olympics training session yesterday after arriving in Sochi without their luggage.
With the Games due to begin this morning, Jamaica’s two-man team of Winston Watts, 46, and Marvin Dixon, 28, are without the blades that attach to their sled, or their competition clothing.
Such is the popularity of the Jamaican bobsleigh team, whose journey to the 1988 Winter Olympics inspired the 1993 Disney film Cool Runnings, Watts and Dixon had received £60,000 in public donations to aid their funding and help Jamaica end a 12-year absence from the Games.
Meanwhile, telecommunications giant AT&T, chief sponsor of the American Olympic Committee, have condemned legislation, passed by Russian President Vladimir Putin in July, restricting gay-rights activity.
An AT&T statement read: “We condemn violence, discrimination and harassment targeted against LGBT [lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender] individuals.”
