Walkie Scorchie to apply sun block
THE SKYSCRAPER dubbed the Walkie Scorchie is to be armed with “horizontal aluminium fins” that will cross the tower from top to bottom to prevent its windows reflecting the ultra-bright rays that dazzled passers-by last summer.
According to plans submitted this week and seen by City A.M., developers Land Securities and Canary Wharf want to clad the southern face of the building with eight blades known as “brise soleil” per floor from level 3 to level 34.
“As the sun shines on the building and hits the fins, it will either be absorbed by the fins or if it hits the glass as it gets reflected back out, the light gets diffused by the brise soleil,” Land Securities head of development Colette O’Shea told City A.M, denying that the work has put tenants off.
The group said the cost will be in the “low single-digit millions” and that the work will take around six months to complete.
