Strachan wants regular renewal of auld rivalry
SCOTLAND manager Gordon Strachan hopes his side can start to play England more often, as they prepare to take on the auld enemy at Wembley tonight for the first time in 14 years.
The pair have met competitively just three times since 1989, with England triumphing 2-0 in a Euro ’96 group match and 2-1 on aggregate in a two-leg Euro 2000 qualifying play-off.
But Strachan believes it would be good to see their rivalry renewed more regularly.
“It’s a fixture we all want to see more often,” he said.
“Players, fans, media, even people who are not really football fans are interested in that Scotland-England game.
“I know we play them in other sports, but this is the sport where everybody can really attach themselves and enjoy it.
“It is a friendly, it’s a celebration of football, but as a game it’s got to be competitive. You can tell the difference. There is pressure there, trust me.”
Celtic midfielder Scott Brown is set to captain Scotland tonight, who will be without injured midfielder Liam Bridcutt.
But Strachan is yet to finalise his starting line-up.
