Evans pulls off shock on first day of US Open
BRITISH No3 Dan Evans won his first ever grand slam match yesterday with a shock straight sets victory over No11 seed Kei Nishikori in the US Open first round at Flushing Meadows.
The 23-year-old qualifier won 6-4, 6-4, 6-2 on court 13 and is now guaranteed to pick up at least £34,000 in prize money.
Evans, ranked 179th in the world, will play Bernard Tomic in round two, after the Australian edged a five-set thriller against Spain’s Albert Ramos 6-3, 3-6, 4-6, 7-6, 6-3.
In the women’s first round Laura Robson, seeded 30th, showed no signs of being hampered by a heavily strapped right wrist as she eased past Spain’s Lourdes Dominguez Lino 7-5, 6-0.
The 19-year-old will play France’s Caroline Garcia in round two.
Britain’s No2 Heather Watson is scheduled to play last on court 11 today against 21st seed Simona Halep of Romania.
