Root inspires first tour win
ENGLAND batsman Joe Root hit an unbeaten century to steer his team to a 29-run victory in yesterday’s first tour match in the West Indies.
The hosts, a University of West Indies Vice Chancellor’s XI, won the toss and chose to bowl first, but struggled against all-rounder Ben Stokes, batting at three, who scored four sixes on his way to 58 and Root, who hit 104 runs off as many balls.
England reached 290-8 at the conclusion of their 50 overs.
On a slow pitch, Kyle Corbin took full advantage to reach 100 off 98 balls, in an innings which included 14 boundaries.
But three wickets for off-spinner James Tredwell helped restrict the hosts to 261-7.
