Gasquet ends Ferrer US bid
FRANCE’S Richard Gasquet brushed aside a comeback from Spain’s David Ferrer last night at the US Open to win in five sets and reach only his second career grand slam semi-final.
Eighth seed Gasquet raced into a two-set lead and, after fourth seed Ferrer had mustered all his battling qualities to force a decider, completed a 6-3, 6-1, 4-6, 2-6, 6-3 victory.
In the women’s draw at Flushing Meadows yesterday unseeded Flavia Pennetta beat 10th seed and fellow Italian Roberta Vinci 6-4, 6-1 to qualify for her first grand slam semi-final.
