Royal duo trade billions to raise cash for charity
IT SOUNDS like the start of a bad joke – the Duke of Cambridge, Cherie Blair and Jimmy Carr walk onto a City trading floor. But the heady mix of household royals and comedians at BGC Group yesterday were there to raise millions for charity.
The company’s ninth annual charity fundraising day, held every year on 11 September to commemorate victims who died in the atrocity, attracted a roster of famous names including the Duke and his brother Prince Harry.
The royal duo set a record for a foreign exchange forward trade, closing a €25bn (£21bn) deal with two investment banks. “They seemed to know what they were doing,” one trader on the desk quipped.
The event was compered by comedians Rob Brydon and Carr, who got into the spirit of things by hitting the phones.
Other stars raising money included Spurs manager Andre Villas-Boas, Baywatch star David Hasselhoff, businessman Duncan Bannatyne and boxing legend Frank Bruno.
