Fashion wars… a Lidl bit of what you fancy
The invasion of supermarkets into the fashion sector is hotting up after hard discounter Lidl announced yesterday it was entering the fray.
The German retailer is to launch a new fashion range for women next Monday, including ankle boots for £9.99 and even a faux leather jacket for £15.
Lidl already sells basic clothing such as underwear and vests, but it is the first time that it has branched into fashion as it aims to compete with Asda’s George brand, and labels such as Tesco’s F&F and Sainsbury’s TU.
Supermarkets have been rapidly expanding their presence in the clothing and account now for £3.5bn of the £35bn UK fashion market.
Lidl’s sales are up almost 20 per cent year-on-year and with German peer Aldi now hold 8.4 per cent of the grocery market.
