Business groups unite in call for tax cuts to boost economy
GEORGE Osborne should avoid populist measures and deliver a programme of radical tax cuts that would boost the economy, business groups said yesterday.
Speaking as the Conservative party conference got underway in Manchester, both the Institute of Directors (IoD) and British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) called for more ambitious policies.
“The challenge for the Conservatives is to respond to Labour’s populist announcements with policies that will bring about long-lasting economic benefits,” said the IoD’s Simon Walker. “We therefore encourage George Osborne to make the case for lower, simpler taxes, paid for by lower public spending.
John Longworth of the BCC said the chancellor should act to reform the “iniquitous business rates regime that is stifling the growth and confidence of companies” and do more to incentivise entrepreneurship.
