Apple mulling $400 price for its iWatch ahead of mystery launch
Apple is reportedly considering a $400 (£240) price point for its upcoming wearable device due to be unveiled, along with two new iPhones, next Tuesday.
Executives at the tech titan are said to be still finalising pricing for the so-called iWatch, which is not expected to go on sale until early 2015, according to tech website Re/Code.
Sources told Re/Code that the pricing, which does not include VAT or shipping additional costs related to UK sales, could cover a range of different models, including lower priced versions. Apple will also reportedly unveil larger 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch screened iPhones, a move expected to counter the success of rival smartphone maker Samsung with its larger Galaxy devices.
Apple’s wearable smartwatch will be the company’s first new product category since former chief executive and co-founder Steve Jobs unveiled the iPad in 2010.
Chief executive Tim Cook has promised new product categories for 2014 during Apple’s recent results calls with analysts. Software chief Eddy Cue has called Apple’s product pipeline for the rest of 2014 the best he’s ever seen. On Thursday Apple sent out press invites to an event at 6pm (gmt) on 9 September in California, which teased: “Wish we could say more”
