Amec: Scottish split would be bad for business
ENGINEERING giant Amec has urged voters in Scotland to keep the UK united, or risk billions of pounds of North Sea oil investment.
The chief executive of Amec, which employs 4,500 workers in the oil and gas industry, said a “yes” vote would spell disaster for the North Sea at a time when the industry is seeking vast investment. “For me, there is no question. I believe in the UK – that being together is a better outcome for both the Scots and the English,” Samir Brikho told the Telegraph.
His comments come as a new poll revealed that support for Scottish independence has increased. The Panelbase survey revealed that the lead enjoyed by Alistair Darling’s unionist campaign has been slashed from 24 points to just six.
Darling, head of the Better Together campaign, told the BBC’s Andrew Marr show yesterday that the yes camp’s negative attitude is bringing shame on Scotland. “The negativity is largely coming from the nationalists… when anyone speaks out against them they monster them. We had a businessman earlier in the week who said he thought staying in the UK was good for his business – the behaviour towards him was disgraceful,” Darling said.
