Electronic Arts eyes Apple Watch for new games
It might sound like a fiddly proposition, but games giant Electronic Arts (EA) has its eye on the Apple Watch as a potential new platform for its games.
Frank Gibeau, head of EA’s mobile games division, said the company is “pretty excited” about Apple’s new product and the gaming possibilities that come with it.
“It’s very early days," Gibeau told CNET. "But for EA, the emergence of another gaming platform is compelling for us”.
EA already develops 21 games for Apple mobile platforms, including Sim City, FIFA 14, The Sims and The Simpsons: Tapped Out.
And the gaming giant apparently sees no reason why the two companies can’t delve into wearable technology together.
Gibeau said:
One of the things we're intrigued with in the mobile division is seeing wearables emerge as a gaming platform. We think we're in the early stages of that, if you look at Oculus and its relationship with Facebook, and Google Glass. Now with Apple's big announcement with the watch, there's a trend here where wearables are going to increase in performance, capability and unique functions over time that we believe will enable gaming experiences. In fact, we have two teams prototyping wearable experiences that are not only standalone, but also some ideas where you can actually use the fitness component in the watch that can unlock capabilities in the game that might be on your iPhone.
Oculus is the virtual reality company which Facebook bought for $2bn (£1.2bn) in March.
The Apple Watch will go on sale early next year and will be available in a number of different modifications including size, metal and strap styles.
The watch also allows users to monitor fitness and heart rate levels, as well as make calls and send emails.
