Tag Heuer is planning a smartwatch after Apple Watch launch
Apple might have one more watchmaker a little hot under the collar with the Apple Watch.
Luxury watch brand Tag Heuer has told a Swiss newspaper it’s planning to launch a smartwatch a week after Apple launched its much-anticipated smartwatch.
Jean-Claude Biver of Tag Heuer owner LVMH said "We want to launch a smartwatch at Tag Heuer, but it must not copy the Apple Watch. We cannot afford to just follow in somebody else's footsteps.
Biver, president of luxury behemoth LVMH’s watch division, did not share further details on the plans but had previously said that he was “disappointed” with the Apple Watch and “expected more” after its unveiling last week.
The 150 year-old swiss watch brand and other venerable Swiss watch makers have said they are not too worried about Apple’s foray into their territory. However Tag Heuer isn’t the only one looking to compete with Apple- and other tech firms- in the smartwatch market.
Switzerland’s biggest watchmaker Swatch is already planning a smartwatch for next year but ruled out collaborating with tech firms on the product, saying it could do it on its own.
Swatch chief Nick Hayek told Reuters "All the big technology firms want to work with us and I don't rule out that we are or could be collaborating in some areas. But we can also do many things on our own."
