New iPhone breaks records with more than 4m pre-orders in first day of sale
APPLE chalked up a hit with its iPhone 6 as the technology giant received more than 4m pre-orders for the handset on its first day on sale – double the 2m sales the iPhone 5 attracted on its launch.
The huge sales come despite the hefty price tag. Depending on the model, the phone comes with a recommended price of between $199 (£123) and $399.
And each corresponding model of the bigger iPhone 6 Plus costs an additional $100, with the most expensive coming in at $499.
“Assuming pre-orders are similar to the 40 per cent of first weekend sales for the iPhone 5, this would imply iPhone 6 first weekend sales could be around 10 million,” said Wells Fargo analysts in a note published yesterday.
But investors were not swayed by the strong order book – Apple’s shares stayed flat on the day.
The company’s new Apple Watch will be launched for sale in early 2015, at a similarly pricey $349.
