Farbrace to quit as Sri Lanka boss and join Moores’ England set-up
SRI LANKA coach Paul Farbrace is poised to be confirmed as assistant to new England boss Peter Moores after deciding to leave his current post just three months into a two-year contract.
The former Middlesex and Kent wicketkeeper, 46, led Sri Lanka to World Twenty20 glory during his short spell in charge but has informed his employers that he intends to leave.
Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) said: “The national coach Paul Farbrace tendered his resignation and has indicated to SLC of his unavailability to continue with SLC with immediate effect in order to take up an appointment with the England and Wales Cricket Board.”
In a further twist, former Kent coach Farbrace’s first Test series in the England set-up is set to be against Sri Lanka, who arrive for matches in all formats next month.
He will act as No2 to Moores across Test, one-day and T20 cricket. Moores returned to the job on Saturday, four years after leaving the post amid a breakdown in relations with batsman Kevin Pietersen.
Farbrace joined Sri Lanka from Yorkshire, where he was second XI coach, following a spell in charge of Kent. Before that he was assistant to Trevor Bayliss with Sri Lanka, and suffered minor injuries in the terrorist attack on the team’s bus in Pakistan in 2009.
