French strike over super tax
CLUBS in the top two tiers of French football plan to strike next month in protest at government proposals to introduce a 75 per cent “super tax” on those whose annual salary exceeds €1m (£850,000).
Under the proposals clubs, as opposed to individuals, would be liable to pay the increased rate of tax, though Ligue 1 title challengers Monaco would be exempt as they do not fall under French tax laws.
The strike is planned for the weekend beginning 29 November. President Francois Hollande is due to meet clubs for talks next week.
Clubs fear the super tax will deter top players from joining French sides and lead to an exodus of current talent. Qatari-owned Paris Saint-Germain would be hardest hit.
